Music Auditions—Lessons/Groups &
Placement Tests
Music Group Auditions (Choirs, Bands, Orchestras, Instrumental Groups)
Students taking music lessons for the first time at BJU or changing to
a different music area must audition before registering for classes. After
completing the audition, students will enter the assigned course number on
their class schedule. Students continuing lessons are to register each
semester. Auditions will take
approximately 15 minutes and must be taken on the days
scheduled. No music lessons may be added after
registration closes at the start of each semester.
An accompanist and other audition
materials will be provided as needed. Click for Audition
Requirements.
Music Group Auditions (Choirs, Bands, Orchestras,
Instrumental Groups)
All students (undergraduate and
graduate) are welcome to audition for a music ensemble. Auditions will take
place at the same times and locations as the auditions for music lessons. Students desiring to join a music group may block hours in your trial class schedule

Placement tests are given to determine the level of
instruction for which a student should register. Students should take all
placement tests that apply to them before registering for classes. Following each test, students will be
informed which course(s) they should register for and/or waive.

·
English: New and transfer students (associate students who
receive fewer than 6 English credits or baccalaureate students who receive
fewer than 9 English credits) who have no test scores must take this placement
test. Testing may take as much as 45 minutes. (Note that we cannot use the CLT
for Math or English placement.) Students wanting to challenge their ACT or SAT
placement may also take the placement test.
·
World Language (Chinese, French,
German, & Spanish):
Students registering for a world language
course for the first time at BJU must take the appropriate placement test.
Testing may take as much as 45 minutes. A short verification is all that is
needed for a student with no experience in the language.
·
Computer Science: Required of students who wish to try to waive
CpS 110 (Object-Oriented Programming I) and begin with CpS 209 (Object-Oriented
Programming II). Students must qualify to take Ma 105. The test is in two
parts: a multiple choice part that could take as much as 45 minutes, and (if
that is passed) a programming part that should take no more than 60 minutes.
Mathematics Tests
·
Students
whose major requires a college math course should look at this study guide to
prepare: ARTStudyGuide
·
Students
whose major does not require
a college math course should look at this study guide to prepare: LAMStudyGuide
·
If
you are not certain whether your major requires a college math course, click here to connect to your major’s
program page or contact your advisor.
·
Mathematics Proof Techniques: Required of students registering for most
400-level math courses in an upcoming semester. Ma 299 Mathematical Proofs is a 1-credit transition course between
lower-level mathematics courses and more abstract/theoretical upper-level
courses in which mathematical proofs are essential (see the course webpage for
additional information on the placement test). Students who pass this test will
be allowed to waive this prerequisite. Testing may take as much as 30
minutes. Students should not take this test unless they are directed to do so
by a math faculty member.
·
Statistics Test for Math Education
Majors only:
Offered to Mathematics Education majors who
wish to try to exempt Applied Statistics (Ma 320) in order to replace the
requirement with a more advanced upper-level course.
Music
Tests
·
Music Qualifying:
Students auditioning for a voice lessons for the first time
at BJU who are not a music major or minor, must take this test before
auditioning for their voice lesson. If not passed, Pi 101 Beginning Piano is
strongly recommended before taking voice lessons (to learn the fundamentals of
reading music). Testing should take 15 minutes or less.
·
Rudiments of Music:
Required of all new music majors or minors registering for MT
105 Theory I. If not passed, MT 099 Introduction to Music Theory (0 credit, 0
load) must be taken during the same semester as MT 105. Testing should take 30
minutes or less.
·
Music Theory:
Required of new music majors and minors who
want to place out of or validate music theory courses (MT 105 & 106) on the
basis of previous training.
