PatternMining

PatternMining

Also known as PatternsMining, PatternHarvesting?. See also: PatternMiners?, DavidDeLano, JimCoplien, BobHanmer.

Patterns aren't manufactured or created. They are mined from empirical, proven practice.

Once mined, patterns are refined in WritersWorkshops by PatternSmiths? (or PatternJewelers?) who polish them into beautiful works of literature.

There is an article on PatternMining in the C++ Report of October, 1995 (Volume 7 Number 8), for which the abstract is:

Patterns don't just come out of thin air--they capture proven development experience. Gems of knowledge come from projects with proven track records, and it takes work to extract them. Pattern-mining activities at AT&T have produced a wide variety of patterns now being used by new development projects. We use knowledge extraction techniques analogous to those used by knowledge engineers to feed expert system knowledge bases.

New projects are using these patterns as an architectural basis; existing projects are using them as architectural documentation. Patterns have found some surprising applications as well, including requirements generation and validation.
