Students
receive this certificate upon claiming their reservations at check-in for the initial
term of an academic year in which they enroll. The certificate provides students with
their campus contact information (including residence hall room assignments),
reservation status and academic information. For a New or Transfer students who did not
attend summer orientation, the certificate lists placement tests and music
auditions to be completed prior to seeing their advisors—based upon the
declared major’s first-year, first-semester requirements and whether or not
they have had ACT or SAT scores reported to BJU. Replacement certificates may be obtained
at the Welcome Center (Student Center).
Returning students continuing residence
enrollment do not receive a certificate but must check in at the Davis Field
House to claim their reservation during posted check-in hours.
Each student’s admission certificate has one
of the following reservation statuses for assisting students with registration
and Welcome Week activities:
·
New: Students enrolling for the first time in residence
at BJU.
·
Transfer: Students enrolling for the
first time in residence who previously attended a postsecondary institution
full-time during a semester following high school graduation.
·
Returning: Students previously enrolled in residence during a
semester at BJU.

New & Transfer
Students
100/200-Level
Courses: Freshmen
should follow the general program outlined in the current BJU Catalog
for their particular major. Freshmen should normally take only courses numbered
in the 100’s and 200’s. Under no circumstances may a freshman take
courses numbered above the 200’s unless he places into them by
examination or meets all prerequisites.
BJU Core Courses
· Uni 101 Pathways: This course is required the initial semester of residence enrollment. This requirement is waived if a student entered as a transfer student with 12 or more hours.
·
English: All New and Transfer students enrolling at BJU for the
first time must register for an English course. A student’s admission
certificate will specify if the English placement test is required to determine
placement (see Placement Tests).
o International
Students: For whom
English is a second language and who are not in the Bridge to College English
program should enroll in section 50 of En 101 Composition & Grammar. Students enrolled in this section should
not take History of Civilization or any psychology course in the same semester.
·
Speech Communication: Fundamentals of Speech (Com 101) must be taken by the end of a
student’s freshman year (according to the recommended schedule for the
student’s major as listed in the BJU Catalog), unless the student has an
irreconcilable schedule conflict.
ACT/SAT Scores: ACT, SAT, CL scores
are required of all New and Transfer applicants to complete admission to BJU and
are useful in advising during one's college career.
If no scores are listed on a student’s admission certificate, the
student must take the following placement tests (See Placement Tests):
·
English Test:
o
Associate
students who transferred fewer than 6 English credits
o
Baccalaureate student
who transferred fewer than 9 English credits.
·
Mathematics Test:
Required
only if students NEED a mathematics course the initial semester
of enrollment. Students who can
wait to take a mathematics course should wait until the next semester when
their ACT or SAT scores are available.
A student without ACT, SAT scores must
take a test during the initial semester of enrollment.
New and Transfer students
with no ACT, SAT or CL scores enrolling:
· Students must register online to take the test on one of the national test dates. The examination is administered nationally on established schedules with a closing date for each administration. Information, dates of administration, online registration, etc., are available at www.actstudent.org. The ACT code number for BJU is 3836.
For additional questions, please check
with the Registrar's Office (Student Services Hub).
Financial Aid & Academic Requirements
Students receiving financial aid through loans, scholarships
or grants are responsible for knowing the academic requirements for maintaining
their aid. To receive the maximum
amount of financial aid for which you are eligible, you must enroll in a
minimum of 12 credits, excluding audited courses where no credit is earned and
repeated courses for which credit has already been earned.
Repeated courses for which credit has already been earned and
audited courses for which no credit is earned are NOT eligible for financial
aid. Based on the type of loan,
scholarship or grant, the qualifications for cumulative or semester grade point
average may vary. Satisfactory
academic progress toward the completion of a degree may also be a
consideration.
Changes to registration or withdrawing from courses can
result in changes to your financial aid or scholarship eligibility. Financial aid and scholarship
eligibility may change depending on your credit load at the end of the drop/add
period or end of the semester if you withdraw from any courses during the
semester.
Dropping a class could mean loss of continued eligibility or
all or part of any financial aid or scholarship. You could be required to repay credit
balance checks or be held responsible for any charges on your account no longer
covered by aid. In extreme cases,
it may be advisable to take a poor grade for a class, even though it impacts
your GPA, rather than reduce your credit load and lose financial aid
eligibility.
For question concerning load requirements or continued
eligibility for financial aid or scholarships, see the Financial Aid office
(Student Services Hub).
The drop/add
period at the start of a term is primarily for those students who are
incorrectly registered because of an error made during registration and for
those students who must change a course or section at the request of the
University. Students who wish to make changes for other reasons will be permitted to
do so as class limits permit. At
the end of the drop/add period, student schedules are set for the term. A
charge of $5 will be made to a student’s account for every schedule
change (unless the change is made at the request of the University):
·
Students
who preregistered and earned a cumulative GPA to be removed from limited load
or academic probation may add one class without charge during the drop/add
period.
·
Students may not add music lessons
during the drop/add period. (Music lesson changes can be made only at the Dean
of the School of Fine Arts and Communication office, Fine Arts 304).
· Classes dropped during the drop/add period are not recorded as part of the student’s academic record. Students are not permitted to add classes after the end of the drop/add period but may withdraw from classes.

first class withdraw deadline will not change the tuition and/or fees owed.
See
BJU undergraduate
and graduate catalogs for tuition information.
Supplementary
Checklist Items
Registration,
including accepting a preregistered class schedule, takes place at the start of
each term after each student checks in to claim a reservation and before the
first day of classes.
Preregistration
for the next semester is spread out over several weeks to allow students ample
time to complete appropriate registration activities and submit a trial class
schedule prior to the end of the current semester.
BJU has a strong
commitment to assisting students who need to work to remain in school. Our
registration program will permit students who must work during usual class
hours to block out hours when they will not be able to take classes because of
work.
If you have particular
music program requirements or intercollegiate competitions, you will also be
permitted to block out hours for rehearsal or practice time.
If you need to make
changes to your class schedule after you have completed registration, you will
have opportunity to make changes during the drop/add period. There will be a
charge for these changes. No classes may be added to the schedule after the end
of the drop/add period.
Academic Advising
You
are assigned an advisor according to the major you have chosen. Your
advisor’s name and office location is on your admission certificate and
under the Academics menu option in StudentCentral. All advisors are in their offices during
registration periods at the start of a semester and during posted hours during
preregistration activities for the next semester.
Advisors
are available to:
·
Discuss
and give advice concerning your major/academic and career plans.
·
Discuss
and give advice concerning course selection and your trial class schedule.
·
Help
resolve any schedule conflicts or validation problems with your trial class
schedule.
·
Help
New
students create and submit a class schedule for registration.
·
Change
the advising status to Advised for Transfer and Returning
students or Students with Graduate
Classification to submit trail
schedules before the end of a preregistration or registration period.
Your advisor meets with many
advisees during registration; therefore, both you and your advisor benefit if
you come with questions prepared.
See information about advising session, setting goals and achieving academic
success under the Academics
menu option in StudentCentral. During
other times of the year, your advisor can be most helpful when you make an
appointment to see him.
You are
ultimately responsible for the major you choose, the classes you select, and
the course sequence you follow. Your advisor is available to
help guide and counsel you throughout your college career. Your advisor can
best assist you when you take the initiative to meet with him, ask questions,
express ideas, and openly communicate any other information that would allow
him to provide the best recommendations.
Center for Career & Calling
Consult
the Career Services for yearly activities to assist with one’s career
action plan and college success.
See https://home.bju.edu/academics/career-services/.
Major/Minor or Program Change
Students may submit
major/minor or program change anytime In StudentCentral. Any changes should be made prior to or
during a registration or preregistration period to ensure the student is
assigned to the appropriate advisor and able to have the correct checksheet to
assist with course requirement planning.
See StudentCentral,
Program & Graduation for
additional information.
Checksheet
Your
checksheet provides all requirements for your major and degree program from the BJU Catalog. The registration and academic links in
StudentCentral contains academic and registration information you will follow
with the guidance of your advisor. Any change in degree requirements must be
submitted by the dean and approved by the registrar. A ruling by the Academic Council will be
required in some cases. Your advisor cannot authorize a change that
has not been properly submitted and approved.
Under
the direction of the registrar and the deans, the Registrar's Office has the
overall responsibility for academic information. Questions about degree
requirements should be directed to your dean, the registrar or the checksheet
clerks in the Registrar's Office.
Schedule of Classes
The SOC (Schedule of
Classes) menu option in StudentCentral will aid you in arranging your courses
by providing term and course delivery options so that you can complete your
degree requirements on time.
A sufficient number of
sections of required courses normally are offered so that conflicts with other
required courses can be avoided. However, if you fail to follow the prescribed
sequence of courses or find it necessary to repeat courses, you may experience
difficulty and will need to plan your schedule carefully (perhaps several
semesters ahead). Enrollment limits in certain classes have been established by
the deans because of the nature of the instructional process in each course.
Online Classes
Students should consult with their advisor concerning online
classes. For online class
availability and registration see StudentCentral, SOC
(Schedule of Classes.
Academic Accommodations
Students interested in assistance with learning disabilities
should contact the Academic Resource Center. See Academic
Assistance.
Academic Coaching
Students interested in taking a course to assist with study
skills should consider the following courses available through the Academic
Resource Center. See Academic
Assistance.
Uni
093 Academic Management Seminar: This course is designed to provide
students with resources, techniques and information to enhance their college
success. General class instruction
along with individualized academic coaching is used to help students meet their
academic goals. 0 credit/0 load
Work Students
BJU is
committed to students who need to work to remain in school. Students who have a
day job, Monday through Friday, should discuss their work schedule with their
work manager prior to building their trial class schedule.
Students may block work hours, including travel time
to off-campus jobs, by half-hour or hour periods of time on their trial class
schedule. Blocking extra hours may limit a student’s ability to complete
registration.
If class schedule changes are necessary after
registration, changes may be made during the drop/add period. There will be a
charge for these changes.
Students should confirm their work schedules with
their work manager once they have accepted their class schedules or have made
any drop/add changes.
Schedule Validation &
Submission
During registration and preregistration
validations are issues that StudentCentral finds in an students schedule. Severity levels include Note, Warning
and Critical.
·
Note: Highlights
something that needs to be addressed (i.e., Not Advised status).
·
Warning:
Highlights issues for students but does not prevent them from
registering (i.e., no lunch hour).
·
Critical:
Highlights problems that must be resolved for the student to complete
registration (i.e., prerequisite not met).
To resolve a critical validation the advisee may need to:
o
Adjust
his trial class schedule on the Schedule Planner page with advisor’s
assistance.
o
Print
the form designated in the Solution column and follow the instruction. The
form must be processed and then the trial schedule submitted.
o
Once
the approval has been granted, the override column includes the level of an
applied override (i.e., Course, Section, Schedule).
All Note
and Critical validations must be resolved prior to the activation of the
Submit Trial Schedule button for submission.
Junior & Senior Classification
Students with junior or senior classification should plan
their schedules for not only the current semester but also for the two or three
to follow. Students within 50 hours
of completing their degree this May, August or next December need to plan their
schedules to complete all degree requirements in a timely manner and to avoid
conflicts.
Graduate Approval for Seniors
Seniors
in their last two semesters of enrollment who will be completing their bachelor
degree requirements and have a 2.5 cumulative GPA may register for one graduate course for graduate
credit.
Senior
who will be pursuing a graduate program at BJU the next semester following the
completion of their degree requirements must receive graduate approval from the
Academic Council. Application is to
be made through StudentCentral under the Academics menu option.
Note: Students desiring to enter
a graduate program at BJU the next semester need to have all undergraduate
degree course requirements completed by the Wednesday prior to the beginning of
classes for the next semester.
Prospective Graduates (December/May/August)
Students
who expect to complete all of their degree requirements (associate, bachelor, master’s or
doctorate) by December, May or August for current
academic year must declare their intent by completing a Diploma Order in
StudentCentral. During
registration, StudentCentral will prompt students who are close to completing
their requirements to indicate their intent. The anticipated conferral, month/year,
will be listed in StudentCentral on the student’s profile page and
checksheet.
For more information and eligibility
for Commencement participation see Prospective Graduates
(December/May/August)
